Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is made up of several tiny radio-equipped sensors connected to autonomously form networks, deployed in mostly hard-to-reach areas to gather and disseminate information on a phenomenon. In Sensor Network (SN) one of the primary requirements is addressing but this comes with an additional cost; the construction and maintaining of these addresses adversely constraint the limited resources of sensor nodes especially taking into cognizance that it is mostly deployed in remote areas. Every bit transmitted in terms of exchange messages during the address acquisition process weakens the lifespan of the sensor network. In this paper, we proposed a scheme for IPv6 address assignment in WSN. Several sensors nodes are arbitrary grouped into clusters, and by using the division method of the hash function: h(k) = k mod m, a new ID for a new sensor node seeking a cluster membership to the network is generated, and uniqueness verified. In accordance with an adopted IPv6 address structure, an IP address is assigned to the new sensor node. The proposed scheme is implemented using NS-3, evaluation results show that the designed technique for performing DAD significantly minimizes exchange messages between nodes and thereby optimizes the address assignment process by reducing time, cost of configuration and energy consumption, and improve latency
